Learning to Suck at Something

I am grateful that my Zen master, through a phone app, no less, reassures me that my mind will indeed wander during a sit, and all I have to do is realize it and come back to stillness. As many times as is necessary.

Sometimes a shocking amount of times.

The progress comes from showing up for myself every day and doing the meditation.

I needed that reassurance because I would have otherwise quit.

I would have judged myself as “no good at it” - not an instant expert - and I would label the entire venture a waste of time.

Honestly, that’s the most tangible benefit I’m getting from the practice at this point - learning to suck at something and stick with it anyway. Big lesson for me.

I am sure there are many other benefits of meditating, but I think they are sneaking up on me and working me over on the sly.

Learning to suck at something is a particularly loud benefit.
